Three Northern Guilford athletes captured individual 3-A state track championships at N.C. A&T University on Friday and the Nighthawk boys went on to finish second in the state as a team.
Individually, junior T.J. Logan won the 200-meter dash championship with a time of 21.54 seconds while teammate Jimmy Hollingsworth, also a junior, was tops in the 1,600-meter run. Hollingsworth took the gold medal with a time of 4:20.36.
Lady Nighthawks freshman Ariel Davis set a meet record in the 100-meter hurdles with an impressive time of 14.39.
In addition to the two individual championships, the Northern boys got a second place finish from Logan in the 100-meter dash (10.51) and a runner-up performance in the 4x800 relay team of Hollingsworth, John Elwood, Mike Elwood and Jon Knight.
Thor Smith was third in the pole vault.
For the girls, Davis added a second place finish in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.91 seconds. Senior Elizabeth Ambler cleared the bar at 11-00 in the pole vault, which was good enough for second place.
In all, the Lady Nighthawks’ performance was good enough for eighth place overall in the state.
