Uses father's gun to scare off suspect

A minor child scared off an intruder thanks to his father's handgun on Dec. 5.

The child, who was home sick from school, reported hearing dogs outside barking, at which point, he saw a masked man with a handgun approaching his home. He retrieved his father's handgun and discovered the intruder inside the home.

The child then fired a shot at the intruder, which struck a TV inside the home. The shot, however, scared the intruder off, and he fled through a field near the house.
Rockingham County Sheriff's deputies conducted a thorough search of the area but did not locate the suspect.

The suspect is between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet tall and was armed with a black, semi-automatic handgun. He was wearing blue jeans, a long-sleeved black shirt and a mask. No other details are known.

Anyone with information about this reported home invasion is asked to contact the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office at 634-3232 or Rockingham County Crimestoppers at 349-9683.
