The painting purchased at the Oak Ridge Goodwill in April for less than $10 sold for more than $34,000 on Sept. 21.
Concord artist Beth Feeback bought the painting and planned to paint over it before discovering its worth. Once it was verified, it was sent to Sotheby's in New York for auction. At the auction, it sold for $34,375. The price includes a hammer price of $27,000 plus a buyer's premium.
Feeback says now that the sale is official, she can't contain her happiness.
"Basically, it's pure, unadulterated joy," she says. "I'd like to be all cool about this, but no, I'm solid gone now. I'm over the moon."
After Sotheby's receives its commission and fees taxes are paid, Feeback notes she and her husband have very modest plans for the money.
"We're having some long overdue repairs done to our house," she says. "We're going to pay off the bills. No huge splurging, just practical stuff we've needed but haven't had the money for."
